Department of

Surgery

Current Curriculum

Surgical education is our top priority at the University of Cincinnati. While independent study is crucial for improving clinical knowledge and operative performance, we provide residents with a variety of structured educational activities. Interns participate in an 8-week “Intern Bootcamp” to learn basic and advanced technical skills. Intern Bootcamp also includes didactic sessions to familiarize interns with both common and emergent clinical scenarios. Interns are frequently reevaluated throughout their first year to make sure they advance their technical skills. To learn more about surgical education and simulation, please click here.

There are additional simulations - porcine, cadaver based, and various sessions - throughout the residency for specific training purposes such as trauma, robotics, hernia, anatomy, vascular anastomosis, etc.

In addition, all residents attend dedicated education time every Wednesday from 7 to 10 AM in the historic Surgical Amphitheater. This includes Curriculum Conference, Morbidity and Mortality conference and Grand Rounds. The majority of surgical services also have weekly education conferences and/or journal clubs. All residents have access to SCORE and resources of the Health Sciences Library, as well as a yearly educational stipend.
