Message from the Program Director

I am proud to present the Department of Surgery at the University of Cincinnati, where our missions are:

1. To provide comprehensive, compassionate and skilled surgical services for Cincinnati and the surrounding region.

2. To train the next generation of surgeon leaders.

3. To advance the state-of-the-art and scientific basis of the discipline of surgery.

4. To provide leadership in ensuring health care for all members of the Cincinnati community.

To fulfill these missions, we continue to build on our historical foundation of exceptional clinical service, teaching, and research. We celebrate diversity while sharing the goals of surgical excellence, scientific discovery, and professional development.

The department of surgery comprises more than 180 surgical faculty plus advanced practice providers, nurses, pharmacists and support staff who all take great pride in their patient care responsibilities and other clinical duties while maintaining a strong relationship with our institutional colleagues and community partners. They are also dedicated to training approximately nearly 200 medical students and an average 100 residents/fellows each year, with the result that our graduates consistently attain the most competitive residencies, fellowships, and faculty positions.

Our academic achievements have also continued to be very strong, and included in this report is a representative listing of faculty publications and presentations. The Department of Surgery is proud to have secured new NIH and extramural grants providing funding for the important discoveries coming from our laboratories dedicated to improving the health of our patients.

This past year we recruited a number of specialists including Dr. Tammy Holm, who is the only board-certified endocrine/general surgeon in Cincinnati; Dr. Chantal Reyna, a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist specializing in breast surgery; Dr. Gregory Wilson, a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist specializing in minimally invasive and robotic surgery; Dr. Robert Van Haren, a fellowship-trained thoracic surgeon specializing in thoracic oncology and enhanced recovery; Drs. Antonio Panza and Hartmuth Bittner, fellowship-trained specialists in minimally invasive cardiac surgery, heart transplant and complex aortic surgery; Dr. Amanda Bailey, a fellowship-trained solid organ transplant surgeon, Drs. Julia Slater and Amy Kite, fellowship-trained plastic and reconstructive surgeons with expertise in burn surgery, wound care, reconstructive and hand surgery; Dr. Peter Andrew Crisologo, a podiatrist with expertise in limb salvage and clinical trial design; and Drs. Hether Khosa, Wallace McLaurin and James Phero, maxillofacial surgeons specializing in management of facial trauma, pediatric OMFS care and corrective jaw surgery, respectively.

Along with the UC College of Medicine, our department’s vision is be indispensable through excellence in surgical care, in the training of tomorrows’ surgeons, and in the discoveries that will improve healing and give hope to our patients. Thank you.
