Research Interests

The goal of our current research is to regenerate the ischemic myocardium and towards this we employ three different approaches namely stem cell transplantation, mobilization of endogenous bone marrow stem cells and promoting proliferation of host cardiomyocytes. We are also investigating the regulation of microRNA by hypoxia inducible factor (HIF-1a) in stem cells and we aim to identify the role of Hif-1a dependent miRs in cell proliferation, angiogenesis and cardiac regeneration. Towards this aim we have generated a transgenic mouse model with mir-210 over expression. We have also identified that mir-210 is involved in angiogenesis and proliferation of adult cardiomyocytes. Our other area of interest is cellular reprogramming; we were one of the first groups to reprogram skeletal myoblasts into Induced pluripotent stem cells (IPS) and to identify tumorigenic risks associated with IPSC transplantation even in an immunocompetent host. In addition, we have successfully collaborated with other researchers from within the division and outside and have produced several peer-reviewed publications.
